What This Phase Is For

Reliability is not about adding commands.
It is about good decision-making under distraction.

fewer cues
less management
higher distraction
more freedom
how to engage without escalating

Creating reliability that goes beyond “obedience,” which only works on leash or at arm’s length.

Building Blocks

Why This Phase Exists

Placement & Readiness:

Behavioral Reliability is appropriate for dogs who:

–> regulate effectively in new environments

–> recover quickly after excitement or stress

–> maintain engagement without constant input

–> are ready for distance, distraction, and reduced management

This phase does not require a specific age or prior class– It requires readiness.

Dogs who struggle with regulation or recovery are better served in Behavioral Stability first.

Most dogs entering this phase already have training.

They can sit, down, walk nicely, and perform well in controlled settings.

What often breaks down is behavior when:

–> distractions stack

–> arousal rises

–> distance increases

–> expectations remain, but support fades

That gap isn’t a lack of obedience.
It’s a lack of behavioral structure.

Behavioral Reliability exists for when behavior needs to hold—not just look good.

CORE MECHANICS

WHAT WE WORK ON

This phase focuses on the mechanics that allow behavior to remain intact as freedom and complexity increase.

Work includes:

—> focus under real-world distraction
—> regulation of arousal and vocal behavior
—> recall reliability beyond controlled environments
—> impulse control around people and dogs
—> leash behavior under pressure
stationary behaviors with duration and distance
—> confidence with novelty
—> continued cooperative handling

Skills are practiced where they usually fail—not where they already work.

For teams seeking it, this phase also supports preparation for Canine Good Citizen–level expectations through functional, real-world reliability rather than test-specific drilling.

Goals

Where This Leads

When reliability is in place:

—> advanced work becomes easier

—> complexity becomes manageable instead of stressful

—> off-leash behavior finally feels within reach

Not because dogs know more commands—
but because their behavior system can finally support them.

Most training stops when behavior looks good.
Behavioral Reliability begins when behavior needs to be real.
